Lecture on Getting an Academic Job:

Lecture on Getting an Academic Job:
http://www.davidschmidtz.com/videos/deserving-succeed

Among the best points:
1. Fear of failure will make you #3 in every search
2. Prioritizing comparative success will diminish your work
3. Your success (or lack thereof) is not a crisis for your academic advisor.

I admit, #3 makes me apprehensive -- I'm not there yet, and I only advise BA and MA students.

Research Network Forum and the Job Market in Rhetoric

I've only attended RNF twice. For Comm rhetors, RNF is an annual day where young scholars submit works in progress for feedback by a roundtable of other young scholars and one senior scholar per table. (Additionally, there is a display of editor's tables at the lunch hour where you can talk about whether an idea you have might be well-pitched for a journal.)

It's a great setup, which is why it has been "borrowed" by RSA, among other conferences.

Mapping Rhet Comp Jobs

Submitted by syntaxfactory on September 19, 2012 - 8:30pm

The MLA Job Information List is out.
Want to see a map of rhet/comp positions advertised thusfar?
http://batchgeo.com/map/587e08777d68113388ea134608265b19
or http://rhetmap.org/

NCA ads are timed for convention interviews in November, while MLA ads are timed for the Christmas MLA convention. So we may see more... We will, in fact, because UMD's job is not listed.

TP Msg. #1118 The Hiring Process for Community College Faculty
Several researchers have commented on the significance of fit—a term that merits closer examination. According to Murray, the word fit implies that the candidate is well suited to both the position and the institution. Credentials alone rarely reveal an individual's abilities or indicate the fit between a prospective faculty member and the hiring institution.

Jobs in rhetoric go the way of Philology...

...at least in Comm studies?

http://www.natcom.org/uploadedFiles/Content/Research/Analysis%20of%20Job%20Postings%202005-2010(1).pdf

Not really -- as a percentage of all jobs in Comm, rhetoric declined only slightly in the period under analysis. Notably, though, if I read the two surveys from the NCA correctly, "generalist" has fallen precipitously, which may tell us something about who can hire in a recession, or...

Anyway. Those of you who didn't find the job you hoped for in 2009, recognize that total jobs in Comm dropped 43% that year, according to this data. Ouch.

"Honing" your application and ruining your summer

Could you specify what it takes to 'hone' an individual application? I've never been on the market. I'm sure you can tailor the cover letter to each institution, but what can you do other than that?

That's a good question. Anon 7:48 responded thusly:
