Quotation du jour

Submitted by Jim Aune on August 25, 2009 - 2:10pm

"The fact that we are not really bothered any more by taking helpless detainees in our custody and (a) threatening to blow their brains out, torture them with drills, rape their mothers, and murder their children; (b) choking them until they pass out; (c) pouring water down their throats to drown them; (d) hanging them by their arms until their shoulders are dislocated; (e) blowing smoke in their face until they vomit; (f) putting them in diapers, dousing them with cold water, and leaving them on a concrete floor to induce hypothermia; and (g) beating them with the butt of a rifle -- all thing

My Excruciatingly Bad Mood

Submitted by Jim Aune on December 17, 2008 - 6:00pm

So this week the MSM cannot tear itself away from Gov. Blago enough to cover the bipartisan Senate report on the Bushies and torture. And: torture goes on in our special education classrooms as well. And, while I'm in a bad mood already, news comes that anti-semitic, homophobic Rick Warren is giving the invocation at Obama's inauguration.

Bill Kristol Proposes Medal for Torturers

Kristol, like Elsa Murano, President of Texas A&M, "pals around with torturers": "One last thing: Bush should consider pardoning--and should at least be vociferously praising--everyone who served in good faith in the war on terror, but whose deeds may now be susceptible to demagogic or politically inspired prosecution by some seeking to score political points. The lawyers can work out if such general or specific preemptive pardons are possible; it may be that the best Bush can or should do is to warn publicly against any such harassment or prosecution.

Michael Savage on autism

The viciously right-wing talk show host Michael Savage tells us autism is a fraud. I have a few used diapers I'd like to send him if anyone has his address:

I made a vow after July 4 not to blog any more about Mr. Bush until after November, but here's one last bit of frat-boy antics to report, especially since it seems to be getting no coverage in the USMSM. Oh, and one more: he greeted the Italian minister in Spanish. . . .

I've spent more time than I probably should over the years defending the intellectual contributions of conservatives like Russell Kirk and William F. Buckley. But it's hard to maintain much sympathy for what passes as "conservatism" in the US after the obituaries for Jesse Helms this past week (whose death on July 4, in the company of Adams and Jefferson, indicates that the Almighty occasionally has a nasty sense of humor). I had been collecting some, but the incomparable hilzoy over at Obsidian Wings

The CIA's "redaction" looks like a perverse Mark Rothko painting. More here from the ACLU.

Huckabee Humor

Submitted by Jim Aune on May 16, 2008 - 3:10pm

From CNN:

During a speech before the National Rifle Association convention Friday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky, former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee — who has endorsed presumptive GOP nominee John McCain — joked that an unexpected offstage noise was Democrat Barack Obama looking to avoid a gunman. “That was Barack Obama, he just tripped off a chair, he's getting ready to speak,” said the former Arkansas governor, to audience laughter. “Somebody aimed a gun at him and he dove for the floor.”
