Happy Birthday, H. P. Lovecraft. Fandom of HPL is at least 10% of the reason I am an academic. When I was an adolescent reading the fanzine Crypt of Cthulhu, filled with quasi-scholarly articles about HPL and his circle and his creations, I knew I wanted to be an exegete.

And when I read the stories in which merely reading a book was enough to drive someone mad, that coming to knowledge was the same as coming to madness, well, what could make reading more attractive?
