The metaphors that get deployed are truly frightening, in no smart due to the MBAs who occupy university administration. Something indeed needs to be done because in our economic crunch we're gonna find these rhetorical chickens coming home to roost... just after the axe starts swinging.
As I'm fond of pointing out, the university model of education is far older (and far less prone to crisis and crash) than the more historically recent corporate models they want universities to emulate. The MBAs stare back blankly, blinking.
