This is about a week old, but I thought it was worth a post here.

The question:

Do you believe in American exceptionalism? If not, can you explain how your view differs from that of your predecessors?

The answer:

Does this answer avoid the real problem? It might. The both/and answer is effective because it is disarming, and I happen to like this answer. But I think there is an argument to be made that Obama's answer avoids the difficult question of whether America practices what it preaches. For example: "No bombs for you, North Korea. Only for us."
