The "Downturn" Hits Home

As I continue to grit my teeth about getting ready for NCA, the news comes from graduate students that *four* [now *five* as I hear Villanova has suspended its search] tenure-track rhetoric searches in Comm have been suspended within the last few weeks, due to hiring freezes at their institutions. The University of Nevada system has appealed for the equivalent of a federal bailout. Other economic news from academe you readers know about? Here's a pretty good article from the Boston Globe on what a depression might look like now. And a very persuasive article from the New Yorker on the auto industry bailout; it's been a key principle among American economists, liberal and conservative, that "industrial policy" (the government picking winners and losers in industry and funneling money to the winners) would be a bad thing. But if you look at the massive subsidies to the aircraft and electronics industries by the military, the argument clearly breaks down.
